4 Reasons Community Service Isn’t Popular Amongst Teens

By: Olivia Estrada

Service is needed everywhere. Places such as the food depository, homeless shelter, and hospital are all examples of hot spots that are always looking for help. So where are all the teens? Oh yeah, Glee marathon was on today.

1.You don't want to wake up early.

So let's say your one of those people who constantly hit their snooze button. Yeah, you're a teen, it's reasonable that you like to stay out late. But it's also sensible that you should give back to your community.

On further not the days of "I just can't wake up that early" are over. There are plenty of places that need help even later on in the day. Don’t believe me?

Well the food bank in Chicago provides shifts and they happen to have a afternoon and evening shift. Also the soup kitchen serves dinner so help isn’t needed till 4:45 p.m.

2. Your friends aren't doing it.

Just because your friends don't want to try something new does that mean you wouldn’t like to?  Going somewhere you want to be a part of can lead you to meet others that like doing the same things you like to do. "It's true, I've met my boyfriend through City Year and we've been together for a year." -Alba, member of City Year.

3. You don't think you'll have fun.

It's impossible not to! It’s science, which makes it a fact!  It’s natural to feel good about yourself when you’re doing kind works for others. When this feeling comes out, how is it possible to not enjoy yourself?

4. You don't know where to go.

Maybe you have preferences. You want to help but you mind seeing blood at a hospital, you will be too tempted to sneak a bite at the soup kitchen, or you just want to find somewhere close to you. Well thankfully volunteer match takes this all into account. All you have to do is add in your location and add key words then it gives a description of sites.

Community Service: What To Wear

By: Olivia Estrada

Stuck on finding an appropriate but trendy outfit to wear for community service? Well don't worry any more! Below is the perfect outfit!

Denim Overalls

Fashionable yet cheap. Just look in the back of your older sister's closet. These jumpers were really hip in the 90's and they are back again! These are perfect if you need a lot of pocket space while carrying around tools. Just wear a t-shirt underneath and your ready to serve!

Quick Dry T-Shirt:

Under your overalls wear a quick dry t-shirt. These are especially helpful when you will be sweating. These t-shirts help keep your t-shirt from sticking to you by the liquid resistant material. Make sure to pick light colors since dark colors attract heat from the sun.

Boots OR Gym Shoe:

Guys love a girl in boots! Also if you will be doing physical work you will need a durable shoe.

Build Your Community the Way You Want It to Be

By: Olivia Estrada

The Damen Silos is located in Chicago. You can see this on the I55 near the Damen exit.

Look familiar? It’s bound for anyone to pass by a vacant lot or abandoned building. Unused property attracts shady trespassers which can lead to things such as vandalism.

Now imagine this. An abandoned building cleared out or a vacant lot cleaned up. This setting is better!

Let's say you were given the funding and advantage to restore or built on a problematic area in your community or in the picture above. What would you put there? Maybe a skate park, shopping area, or condo's.

I’m interested in what you have to say. Leave a comment below! :)
